Cryptolepis, by BioPure, contains cryptolepis sanquinolenta extract in a 33% organic corn alcohol solution. Cryptolepis sanguinolenta (Periplocaceae) is a member of the genus Cryptolepis. An extract from the root is traditionally used by West Africa Indigenous inhabitants in the Akwapim and Kwahu mountainous areas in Ghana to support the body’s response to malaria and is an established antimalarial in West African ethno medicine (Boye and Ampofo, 1983).
Traditionally the plant was used not only to manage various forms of malaria but also fevers and some infections caused by bacteria. The plant may also have potential for lessening symptoms of Type II diabetesin addition to possessing powerful antibiotic properties. The major alkaloid of the roots, cryptolepine (CLP) (Dwuma-Badu et al., 1978; Tachie et al., 1991), is reported to possess a multiplicity of biological effects, reviewed in Bierer et al., (1998), that include antimicrobial, antimuscarinic, vasodilating, noradrenergic, antithrombotic, anti-inflammatory, and hypoglycemic activities*.
