The mucous membranes of the rectum have a rich blood supply and medicines or other herbal substances can be readily absorbed and delivered to the circulatory system. Oral administration of medicines may not always be possible if a patient is incapable of swallowing because they are nauseous, unconscious, or uncooperative–as in the case of a small child. In some cases, more absorption of a medicine can occur through the rectal tissues than orally, because rectal absorption bypasses initial digestion in the gut and delays processing and breakdown by the liver (1,2).
Cocoa butter is a vegetable fat that comes from the fermented, roasted, and crushed seeds of the cocoa plant. This rich emollient is packed with vitamins, minerals, and bioflavonoids, and has been used for hundreds of years to soothe and moisturize the skin, heal wounds and irritations, minimize stretch marks in pregnant women, and to treat vaginal, respiratory and bowel disorders (3). Studies have shown it to be extremely helpful in speeding the healing of serious burns (4).
Cocoa butter’s health benefits stem from potent antioxidant abilities attributable to its high flavonoid content (12-18%). It has been shown to encourage anti-inflammatory reactions, stimulate circulation, and support the immune system (5). Studies have also found cocoa butter to inhibit low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation and platelet aggregation (4).
BioPure uses a food grade cocoa butter that is 100% organic, undeodorized and unbleached. The green coffee beans used in producing the extract in BioPure's suppositories come from organic Coffea arabica plants that contain the highest amounts of beneficial phenols known as chlorogenic acids (CGA). CGA are undergoing a lot of research because of their health-promoting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. They have been associated with reducing blood pressure (6,7) and cholesterol, and lowering the risk of fatty liver disease (8,9,10). By helping to increase the flow of bile, CGA may also support the body in reducing the risk of gallstone formation (10).
Green bean coffee extract also appears to be involved in activation of one of the body’s antioxidant response detoxification pathways (11), and in the reduction of blood glucose in Type 2 diabetics (12). Perhaps the most talked about effect of green bean coffee extract is its promising ability to help reduce weight. The chlorogenic acid in green coffee beans appears to have a beneficial effect on fat metabolism and obesity-related hormones, and may be of assistance to those on weight management programs (13,14,15).
Research has discovered that when coffee beans are exposed to boiling water, a potentially harmful substance known as cafestol is released into the oils of the brew. Cafestol is a type of terpene and appears to have the negative effect of raising cholesterol (16). Roasting has been found to destroy some of the chlorogenic acids present in the beans (17). By not boiling or roasting, BioPure’s coffee extract is prepared to maximize the benefits and minimize the negative effects of their high quality green coffee beans.
Garlic has been used for centuries not only as a food spice but also therapeutically, to fight infections and ward off diseases. It contains a number of beneficial components including minerals, enzymes, and thiosulfinate compounds (allicin, in particular) that impart its health benefits. Garlic acts as a powerful antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiparasitic agent (18), and has shown effectiveness against a wide range of infections including Candida albicans (causing yeast infections), Helicobacter pylori (causing gastric ulcers), Giardia (causing extreme intestinal dysfunction), and multidrug resistant forms of E. coli, Staph. aureus, and others (19). It is promising that drug resistant bacteria such as those causing MDR (multi drug resistant) tuberculosis, do not seem to develop resistance to allicin (20). In general, garlic is believed to boost the immune system and may even enhance the effectiveness of some prescription antibiotics (21).
In addition to its antibiotic effect, garlic’s antioxidant properties boost anti-inflammatory and immune reactions. Garlic’s beneficial effect on cardiovascular health has also been extensively studied and is widely accepted (22). It appears to assist the body in decreasing platelet aggregation (23), inhibiting enzymes involved in lipid synthesis, suppressing oxidation of LDL (good cholesterol), and by affecting cytokines that regulate inflammation (22,24,25). In addition, production of hydrogen sulfide during the digestion of garlic is believed to signal relaxation of vascular smooth muscle and thus help reduce blood pressure (26).
